Uncontested Shots – NBA News, Notes, and Observations From a Self-Described B-Ball Geek

Who’s Calling So Late?
I always had this theory about how easy it would be for the police or the FBI to catch illegal sports bookies. All they’d have to do is see which cell phone numbers received the most phone calls in the 10 minutes leading up to Monday Night Football.
I guess we could apply that same strategy to finding out which NBA teams are the most eager to improve this off-season by checking the cell phone records of every NBA GM at 12:01 AM (EST) Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.
I’m actually quite surprised the NBA hasn’t found a corporate sponsor yet [...]

Jason Kidd to Meet With Knicks

AUTHOR: Justin DeFeo | IN: NBA | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

With the NBA free agent period less than 24 hours away, teams and free agents around the league are exploring their various options.
This does not exclude Hall of Fame point guard Jason Kidd. It is rumored Kidd is to meet with the New York Knicks and perhaps sign on with a team he once dominated while during his time in the metro area with the Nets.
Kidd spent five and a half seasons with the Nets, and though it was a different stage in his career, he proved that if nothing else he can handle playing in the New York market.
Now [...]

Yao Ming’s Career In Limbo

AUTHOR: Justin DeFeo | IN: NBA | COMMENTS: None Yet

Some major news coming from the Houston Rockets reporting that Yao Ming is likely to miss the 2009-2010 season with the same lingering foot injury that sidelined him in this years playoffs.
“At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career threatening,” team physician Tom Clanton said.
So it appears with that news that the Houston Rockets strategy for this upcoming season is going to have to alter course as it seems they are to be playing without their big man. The Rockets continue to be a tragic tale as they have never [...]

The Tuurrible Ten: A Look Back At The Draft

AUTHOR: Drew D | IN: NBA, The Tuurrible Ten | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

A few years from now a lot of people may look back at Thursday night’s draft as the day the other MJ passed away.  However, I think I will always remember the evening for two other reasons:  1) David Kahn and 2) Jay Bilas.
This week’s Tuurrible Ten (or Triple T for short) will take a brief look at some of the people/things/decisions that left me scratching my head.  Away we go…
10)  Sacramento Kings GM Geoff Petrie passing on Ricky Rubio and taking Tyreke Evans -  There is simply no way that Tyreke Evans is a better point guard prospect than Ricky Rubio.  In time Evans may evolve into a quality combo guard, but he isn’t a prototypical floor [...]

Weekend Video – Jason Kidd Edition

AUTHOR: Justin DeFeo | IN: NBA | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

For your weekend viewing pleasure, I’m  going to honor great point guards of the game. For the first weekend edition, my favorite point guard of all time, a true genius…Jason Kidd. Enjoy.
Always a step ahead of the defense.

An amazing pass, splitting three Cavalier defenders. This pass took place in a playoff game, so notice time and situation. 4th quarter with the Nets down four points, a truly pressure packed pass.

Kidd using the glass to set Kenyon Martin up against the Knicks.

Just another amazing pass from Kidd to Jefferson in transition.

My favorite Kidd moment of all time comes in Game 5 of the [...]

Complicated in Minnesota

AUTHOR: Justin DeFeo | IN: Draft, NBA | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Certainly one of the biggest storylines of yesterday’s draft was Minnesota’s decision to draft consecutive point guards with the fifth and sixth picks. Newly hired GM David Kahn backed up his decision of drafting Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn on back to back picks saying that he believed the two could thrive in the backcourt together.
Personally I don’t see it. Both players thrive with the ball in their hands. And on a team that already employs Al Jefferson and Kevin Love (two other players who need ball in hand) there simply may not be enough ball go around.
The question really [...]

Deconstructing the Draft – Blair is a Double Cheeseburger

AUTHOR: Justin DeFeo | IN: Draft, NBA | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Two hours before the draft was set to start, I had an opportunity to go and play some pick up basketball. The game started at 5:30 and my plan was to play for an hour, get home by 6:30, shower and be ready in time for the pre draft show coverage and the draft. Well, that didn’t work out so well.
A game had finished at 6:19 so I thought I had time to squeeze in one more. On the last game the score was 10-9 (We were playing to 12) and I had the ball on a wing. I was able [...]

Uncontested Shots – NBA News, Notes, and Observations From a Self-Described B-Ball Geek

AUTHOR: Andrew Ungvari | IN: NBA, Uncontested Shots | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

When did the NBA turn into a fantasy league? I can’t exactly pinpoint when it happened but I’m loving it. This is shaping up to possibly be the greatest off-season since 1996 when Shaquille O’Neal, Allan Houston, Chris Childs, Kenny Anderson, Chris Gatling, Ervin Johnson, P.J. Brown, and Jim McIlvaine all signed big money deals with new teams and the draft brought us Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Marcus Camby, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Antoine Walker, Peja Stojakovic, Jermaine O’Neal, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
It seems like every five minutes another deal is either in serious talks or nearing completion. I haven’t felt [...]

What The Chuck? Questions Heading Into The Draft

AUTHOR: Drew D | IN: NBA, What The Chuck? | COMMENTS: None Yet

Stoudemire:  Why blow up the team now?

As we are now only a couple hours away from the start of the NBA Draft, I just have a few questions:
1)  If even 1/10 of the rumors are true, it certainly seems like the Phoenix Suns are looking to gut the team and start over.  If that is the case, then why isn’t Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace offering the #2 pick in the draft along with dead weight (Darko Milicic, Greg Buckner & Marko Lima Jaric) for Amare and the Suns first round draft choice?
2) If Tracy McGrady is really being shopped by the Houston Rockets, why doesn’t Bucks GM John Hammond put together a [...]
