2009 Orlando Pro Summer League Preview
As the free agency period is getting sorted out, today marks in my mind the “official” start of the 2009/2010 NBA Season. The 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League starts today at 3:00 pm (eastern time). The summer league means a lot of different things for a lot of different fans and players. First of all it gives the fans of teams with an anticipated draft choice a chance to see their “guy” in action for the first time. Then there are those “young veterans.” The players who have already played a year or two in the league but are in the [...]
What The Chuck? Iverson, Colangelo & Dumars
Allen Iverson The Answer? These days Allen Iverson is more like The Cancer. The Denver Nuggets started gelling as a team immediately after Iverson’s departure and the arrival of Chauncey Billups while the Pistons imploded thanks in part to AI’s reaction to coming off the bench behind Rip Hamilton. Now an unrestricted free agent, Iverson is threatening to retire if his next head coach also has the audacity not to make him an every day starter. Although I don’t have an M.D. after my name, I feel reasonably confident in diagnosing AI with an acute case of Favreitis. Symptoms of this vexing condition include an inability to recognize a [...]
Artest on the Lakers: A List of Pros and Cons
My name is Patrick Crawley (a.k.a. The Basketball Fiend). I’m new to the FanSided roster, but I’ve been the managing editor over at Basketball Fiend for a year. I’m looking forward to contributing to Sir Charles in Charge and working with great writers like Andrew, Justin, Drew, and Adam. Check out my first contribution to SCIC below and, if you like it, head over to Basketball Fiend for more NBA content. On Thursday night, the Lakers shocked the basketball world by agreeing to a contract in principle with controversial forward Ron Artest. Rather than increasing their offer to Trevor Ariza, [...]
Uncontested Shots – NBA News, Notes, and Observations From a Self-Described B-Ball Geek
It’s only been three days since the start of free agency and already we’ve seen a number of players change teams. David Stern has to love the fact that the NBA keeps stealing headlines despite the fact that the season ended on June 14. Its also been a while since an NBA player last got a DUI. Any way we can get a running clock on SCIC in between DUIs? Can’t say the same about the WNBA though. Someone named Diana Taurasi got cited last night for drunken driving. No word yet on whether or not she’ll still be able [...]
Gunning For Number Four
Let me start by saying, I am not Charles Barkley. Seriously, I am still pretty baffled by that slip up from Pioneer Press. How can they miss that? In the days since the Lakers were crowned the NBA Champions and today there has been a ton of player movement and speculation among teams and trades. Some major names in the NBA landscape have switched teams and overall this off season has had a “hectic” feel to it. Whats curious though is how much of that feeling towards things being hectic as been Eastern Conference related. While last years Eastern Conference [...]
The Chuckster and his sizable girth are back to weigh in on a number of NBA issues: 1) What do you think of Joe Dumars signing Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva last night? You mean Joe Dum(b)ars, right? $90 million for a couple of injury-prone gunners? It’s sheer stupidity. Both are shoot first and ask questions later guys who don’t play any defense. Since Dumars seems to be collecting UConn Huskies, I wonder if Jake Voskuhl is next. 2) Which free agent would be at the top of your shopping list if you were a GM? The Turkish Jordan is number two, but #1 has to be the [...]
In this country, no level of stupidity ever surprises me. But today I was actually shocked by stupidity. Pioneer Press/TwinCities.com sportswriter Don Seeholzer actually reported that Sir Charles in Charge is Charles Barkley’s blog (post has been removed after the fact, but here’s a PDF…Update: nevermind, they’ve made the same mistake twice!), despite all the signs to the contrary. Forget the SCIC About page which lists the names of five bloggers — zero with the initials C.B. Forget the disclaimer at the bottom of the same page, which reads… “This site is also not affiliated with Charles Barkley in any [...]
Hedo Turkoglu As A Trail Blazer
Hedo Turkoglu, NBA Free Agent, has met today with head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers Nate McMillan today and will be taking a tour of the city of Portland in the upcoming days. While nothing is official and the talks may be far off from a done deal, I thought it would fun to imagine what bringing in Turkey’s finest player to a roster already good enough to qualify for the Western Conference playoffs would be like. First of all the Trail Blazers roster would become very Orlando Magicesque. They’d have two bonafide scorers on their team. Turkoglu would [...]
Free Agency Begins
As the clock struck midnight last night it signaled the start of the NBA free agent period. As I went to sleep last night I was expecting to wake up to a bunch of different happening overnight, however, when I woke up and checked the internet it seemed like it was a relatively quiet night. Marc Stein of ESPN is doing a nice job of getting to the bottom of some of the teams’ focuses in free agents. Among his findings: – Apparently the Pistons have slid Charlie Villanueva ahead of Hedo Turkoglu on their forward wish list that they wish [...]
