In case you haven’t noticed the unofficial start of the basketball season is finally upon us. An off-season that saw a shotgun wedding, a shotgun arrest, and the Big Diesel now sitting shotgun in Cleveland, is finally over. If you clothes your eyes you can almost smell the full grain leather. Expect the content here at SCIC to increase dramatically both in quality and quantity. There’s finally stuff to write about. No more speculating about whether Shaq and LeBron can coexist, no more guesses on whether Kevin Garnett is healthy, no more wondering how Trevor Ariza will look in the [...]
Gilbert Arenas – Ready to be (Just) A Basketball Player
Seems pretty obvious right? Well in this day and age of athlete/fan interaction and all that is out there for players to get their faces and personalities out there, athletes have been putting more and more time into social media conquests. Common sense would lead you to believe that..more time being spent on other activities is meaning less time being spent on practicing your craft. Not saying that’s true, but it does open yourself up to easy criticism if things go wrong. Well, Washington Wizards fans should be happy to know that their star player, Gilbert Arenas, is ready to [...]
We’re less than six days away from the NBA’s first preseason game between the Jazz and Nuggets. While most sports fans are still basking in the afterglow of the NFL and college football seasons getting underway, I couldn’t be more pumped about watching turnover-filled exhibition basketball games featuring 20-man rosters and 32 percent combined shooting efforts. One of the least mentioned byproducts of having your team make a deep run in the playoffs is that it dramatically cuts your off-season in half. If you’re a fan of the Washington Wizards you haven’t seen your team play since Tax Day. But [...]
Putting a Number on Things – Atlantic Division
In order to stem the tide in this longgg off-season, I have decided to take a look at all the teams in the NBA and give them a value based on the talent of the player’s on their team. Each player will be assigned a number based on their play last season. We’ll add up each individuals number and get a number for the team. This week we’re looking at the Atlantic Division. Here’s how the individual player scoring system breaks down: 5 = All-NBA performers. Bonafide stars in this league. Franchise players. 4 = All-Stars. Just a step below [...]
With NBA training camps nearing I’m hoping that we’re close to having enough material with which to write more than once a week. In the meantime, free agents are getting plucked like leftovers the Friday after Thanksgiving and most NBA beat writers are getting back into the flow. So as always, here are this week’s Uncontested Shots, or should I say, things I was thinking about while counting my dough from winning my first ever fantasy baseball league (long live the Beavers!). Lee and Robinson Appear on the Verge of Signing…Again Alan Hahn of Newsday reported on Monday that David [...]
David Kahn signed the final piece of the puzzle yesterday afternoon (guard Sasha Pavlovic) and something tells me it’s going to be an especially long winter in Minnesota. Al Jefferson and Kevin Love are solid as a rock, but the rest of the roster? Not so much… 10) Wayne Ellington – a nice young player, but unlikely to contribute very much in his rookie season 9) Ramon Sessions – The one positive move Kahn made in a horrific, horrendous and hellacious three months of wheeling and dealing 8) Jonny Flynn – A point guard that just oozes potential. The minutes will be there, [...]
We’re still a few weeks from the start of training camp. The start of the NFL season has done enough to hold us over until then but that doesn’t make me any less excited and antsy for players to report to training camp. Not much of anything has happened in the NBA of late. Ricky Rubio’s situation got resolved. Ramon Sessions got more print in the last few months than he’ll get over the duration of his four-year contract he signed with Minnesota, Allen Iverson signed with the Memphis Grizzlies until he gets bought out in March and signs on [...]
Michael Jordan Takes His Place in the Hall of Greats
In a sort of surreal moment, the greatest athlete ever finally took his rightful place in the Hall of Fame. After watching his speech, you get a taste of the legendary trash talking Jordan. He closed his speech with a quote about the game of basketball..below is that quote: The game of basketball has been everything to me. My refuge, my place I’ve always gone when I needed comfort and peace. It’s been a source of intense pain and a source of most intense feelings of joy and satisfaction and one that no one can even imagine. It’s been a relationship [...]
Jordan, Robinson, Stockton – A Great HOF Class
They say a good way to see the future is by taking a look into the past and that’s exactly what I’m going to be doing. With today’s inductions into the Hall of Fame, I wanted to take a look and see if we can see the games of Michael Jordan, John Stockton and David Robinson in the games of some of today’s great players. I think seeing their game in today’s players is part of their legacies and is a tribute in of itself. Here’s what I think: David Robinson - Was a physical specimen. A freak athlete for a [...]
Allen Iverson A Grizzlie
A lot to report on in the NBA lately, including potentially the greatest Hall of Fame class being inducted this week, but that will be covered later in the week. The big story in the NBA today was the potential signing of Allen Iverson to the Memphis Grizzlies. Iverson broke this news to the greater public by way all mainstream stories are seemingly broke now-a-days…Twitter. This is an interesting signing and for all the Grizzlies may or may not lack in team chemistry, they make up for it with overall team talent. Let’s look at what the Grizzlies are bringing [...]
