New Jersey Nets 0-17 – A New Brand of Stink

Just finished watching the New Jersey Nets fall to 0-17 with their loss on the road to the Lakers. It goes without saying that this Nets team is terrible, but on this particular night it takes the cake. Coming on the heels of the news that the longest tenured coach in the eastern conference, Lawrence Frank, had been fired, I was hoping for a spirited effort from New Jersey but was let down.

Right from the start, the Nets lacked energy, enthusiasm and were simply out classed by a Lakers team that seemed to be in cruise control.

At 0-17 the Nets now join the 1999 L.A. Clippers and the 1988-89 Miami Heat as the only other teams to start a season with 17 straight losses.

The 1999 L.A. Clippers picked up their first win of the season in game 18 beating the Sacramento Kings 106-92. This Clipper team went on to win nine games that season. Their top four scores were Mo Taylor, Lamond Murray, Eric Piatkowski and Tyrone Nesby.

The expansion 88-89 Miami Heat got their win in game 18 beating who else, but the L.A. Clippers by a point, 89-88. The Heat went on to win 15 games that season and were led by such immortals as Kevin Edwards, Rory Sparrow, Grant Long and Rony Seikaly.

For the Nets to get win one and remain in a three way tie for the worst start ever, they are going to have to do so against a quality opponent and beat the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at home. While the season is all but a waste, you’d like to see these players respond with just a shred of pride and professionalism.

Time will tell…
