There has been speculation surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers than most in recent memory. There have been rumors of the Cavs attempting to deal the top pick to Minnesota in a trade that would bring back Minnesota power forward Kevin Love and a deal that would bring in the sixth overall pick and a 2014 first rounder from the New Orleans Pelicans. Kentucky big manNerlens Noel seemed like the obvious pick for quite some, but now Maryland center Alex Len is gaining steam.
ESPN’s Chad Ford has thrown another name into the fold. Ford says he’s “hearing, somewhat convincingly, that owner Dan Gilbert loves Victor Oladipo.”
Face it, owners want their teams in the postseason and the Cavs haven’t been in a playoff game since 2010. If they decide to pick Noel or Len, they are going to have to develop that player. In Noel’s case, because of his injury, they also have to let him rehab and there’s a chance they wouldn’t see him on the court until 2014.
Oladipo, who measured in at 6’4.25 and 213 lbs., is certainly more ready to contribute than either big man. Oladipo also has a chance to be an excellent defender, which is something the Cavs, who finished 27th in defensive rating, definitely need.
Remember, as the owner, Dan Gilbert will have the final say. However, Gilbert has always let his basketball people make decisions when it comes to the draft.
