UPDATE: It looks like the Wizards and Nene avoided a disaster. Nene will be fine.

At the end of Nene’s career, we might just be asking “what if”.

Not because of a bad work ethic or off the court issues, but because the Wizards’ big man just can’t seem to stay healthy. In their season opener Wednesday, he came away hurt…again. Though, the extent of the injury is still not yet known.

After the game, Nene could be seen limping as he left the locker room and it’s a left calf injury, CSN later confirmed….

Nene opened strong for the Wizards by hitting his first three of his first four field goals, all mid-range jump shots. But he apparently came down awkwardly with all of his weight on his left leg on the third attempt. He finished with 12 points and three rebounds in 30 minutes.

It looks like their trade of Marcin Gortat could come in handy early — he came off the bench in game 1. Though, if the Wizards have a legitimate desire to make the playoffs, they’re going to need a healthy Nene. But right now, that remains to be seen.
