NBA Trade Rumors: Would the Rockets trade Asik to Portland?

The Houston Rockets want to make a trade. The Chicago Bulls would be more than happy to get rid of some salary to save some money and avoid major tax. And the Portland Trail Blazers could really use a true center.

See anything there that makes some sense?

Well, the guys over at Blog A Bull did some good work in sketching out a deal that would (likely) make all of these three teams happy.

Houston gets: Taj Gibson, Kirk Hinrich

Portland gets: Omer Asik

Bulls receive:

  1. Terrence Jones:

  2. Cheap contract platter o’ crud: not even expiring because that’s just not available. Talking some combination of 2-year deals like Thomas Robinson, Joel Freeland / Meyers Leonard, Victor Claver, minimum player like Barton or Crabbe. Just assuming that Portland’s rotation+McCollum is off the table.

  3. Aaron Brooks from Houston.

  4. Maybe a pick? Portland owes a first-rounder to Charlotte, and they’d be the candidate to give one up in this scenario. Houston has their first but if you want that pick you’re probably going to expect a downgrade from Jones to someone like Motiejunas. So, probably not a pick.

It makes sense for all three teams. But remember, in the NBA, things that usually make too much sense, rarely happen. But if anything, it’s something to think about.

Also, how good would Portland be with Asik?

You would expect Houston to part with both Asik AND Terrance Jones? Obviously you don’t watch the Rockets. TJ is more valuable to the Rockets than Asik. TJ is a stretch 4, rebounding defender. TJ hits 3s. TJ is why trading Asik for a stretch 4 is no longer a dire need. You obviously don’t watch the teams you write about. Did you used to write for Rant? (walks away shaking head)

Uhm, don’t shoot the messenger. I didn’t come up with the trade scenario. I’m simply stating that it was an interesting one…

It’s not really interesting. TJ is definitely out of the trade question as he has thrived since starting at the 4.

If Asik really goes, what Rockets need is a backup 5 and a backup 2 in order of need.

This is not interesting in the least. Houston trade Terrance Jones ? First of all the 4, Taj Gibson, in the trade has hit his peak and his ceiling is looking way lower than where Terrance Jones is currently. As for the other piece Kirk Hinrich, he’s a point guard, and the last thing Houston needs at this moment in time is another point guard when they have Beverley, J.Lin and Aaron Brooks all of whom are younger and have a much higher ceiling than Hinrich has left in him. If someone wants Asik they had better be willing to give Houston something substantial for him since he has proven he can score, rebound, play really great defense and stay healthy the entire season on top of the fact he’s still young and hasn’t peaked.
