Because that’s what you do around this time of the year — deny that you have decided to leave the team that you’re currently on even if you secretly have.

There’s really no way to know what Carmelo Anthony is thinking right now — of course other than that the New York Knicks are the joke of the league. But Stephen A. Smith isn’t ordinary. He’s going to say what he “thinks” he knows and right now he thinks that Melo is on his way out of New York. Of course, according to his “sources”.

“Carmelo Anthony is gone,” Smith said on his ESPN New York radio show. “Ain’t no way in hell he’s staying here. I’m hearing that this is it, he’s out. Unless the money disappears elsewhere, because he definitely wants go get paid, he’s not trying to stay here for this.”

However, Anthony quickly shot that idea down at shootaround before the Knicks matchup with the Nets tonight.

Even with that said, this is going to continue to be a hot topic until Melo signs his name on the dotted line somewhere in July. Right now, the way the Knicks’ season is going, it’s easy to say that it won’t be in New York. But a lot can happen between now and July. A lot.
