The Orlando Magic, Hedo Turkoglu saga may be soon over, according to reports. Per the Orlando Sentinel, the Magic and Turkoglu appear to be headed towards a split by early January.
Team officials prefer to allocate his playing time to younger players, such as 21-year-old Tobias Harris or 20-year-old Maurice Harkless. Even 28-year-old Arron Afflalo, a natural shooting guard, has started 15 games at Turkoglu’s position of small forward this season to open time for rookie Victor Oladipo to play one of the guard positions.
Rather than have Turkoglu around the team, Magic executives and Turkoglu agreed to have Turkoglu sit out training camp, the preseason and the regular season.
Rather than cut Turkoglu, who is in the final year of his contract, team officials have kept him on the roster because his contract is an asset that potentially could be used in a trade and net the Magic an asset in return.
If it were up to the Magic, they’d trade the 34-year-old. However, if Orlando can’t move him by January 7th, the deadline of when the rest of his $6 million salary is due, the Magic will just waive him. At the moment, only $6 million of his $12 million salary is guaranteed to Turkoglu.
