Just when we had thought that Houston Rockets disgruntled center Omer Asik had fallen off the face of the earth, he pops right back up. He’s resilient. We’ll give him that.
While the self-imposed trade deadline from Rockets GM Daryl Morey came and went earlier this season, it’s obvious as to why Asik was placed on a shelf. Now that the real trade deadline is about two weeks away, it’s time for Asik to come back off the shelf so that he can showcase himself once agin…or something like that.
According to CSN Houston, Asik went through shootaround with the Rockets on Wednesday and is working out with the team again. It appears he will be cleared to play in the next week or so:
Rockets center Omer Asik took part in Wednesday’s shoot-around, but very little heavy basketball work is done by any of the players during the glorified walk-throughs….
“He looked fine to me, he’s moving around, he’s going through 5-on-0, no contact,” Chandler Parsons said on Wednesday. “He seems to be getting better. He can be one of the better centers in this league. To have that luxury of having him and Dwight, his size and length and everything that he can bring to this team can benefit us a lot.”
The hope is still for Asik to get some playing time before the NBA breaks for the All-Star game.
Morey hasn’t been offered a deal for Asik that has been to his liking and it appears that if he wants to really trade him, it’ll be for much less than he wants.
Then again, Asik could return to the Rockets bench and they could attempt to work him back into the rotation. There’s nothing better than adding a toxic situation into the rotation in late February.
