It wouldn’t make much sense for the Sacramento Kings to trade Ben McLemore. He is still in his rookie season and has a bright future ahead of him. He is far from reaching his potential, but the potential that is there is ceiling-less. On the other hand, it would be smart for them to trade Isaiah Thomas.
The Kings’ 25-year-old guard is having a career year averaging 20 points and six assists per game. It could be argued that there is no better time to trade Thomas than right now, this year.
Thomas is set to become a restricted free agent this summer and there’s an overwhelming opinion that the Kings fear that they may not be able to re-sign Thomas at a price that they feel comfortable at. Thus, making him available makes sense.
It’s unclear if Thomas would ever be able to evolve into a full-time starter, but he’s done more than anyone projected as a part-time starter/sixth man in Sacramento. I’m sure there are a handful of teams that are looking at Thomas and seeing an elite sixth man, if not a starter.
Still, if the price isn’t right, I don’t see the Kings forcing themselves into any deal. At the end of the day, they still may just roll the dice and let Thomas become a RFA.
