It’s starting to look very unlikely that we’re going to see a Gasol brothers reunion in Memphis next season.
Earlier this season, when the Grizzlies looked awful, it was plausible that Memphis would look to re-make the look of the team — and the potential of adding Pau Gasol to flank his brother, Marc Gasol, looked possible. However, the Grizzlies have really come on late in the season, thus it’s likely that they would like to keep the gang back together after all.
According to Sam Amick of USA Today, the Memphis Grizzlies are going to make Zach Randolph, not Pau Gasol, the focal point of their free agency activity.
“But a person with knowledge of the Grizzlies thinking said Randolph will be the focus of their free agency affection and that the interest they have in Pau Gasol would be secondary.”
Randolph has a player option for next season, but it’s likely that the Grizzlies could restructure and/or he opts out just to get a longer deal in place. Gasol is an unrestricted free agent after this season, and while he said it would be intriguing to play alongside his brother in Memphis, there have been recent indications that he may be leaning towards re-signing with the Lakers.
Still, wouldn’t an all-Gasol frontcourt be fun to watch? Maybe the Grizzlies will do the Lakers another solid and trade Marc to LA?
