NBA Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers, John Calipari a “done deal”?

John Calipari and his Kentucky Wildcats may have fallen short in Monday night’s NCAA Tournament Championship game against the UCONN Huskies, but word is that he’s about to cash-in on the work he’s done in the collegiate ranks fairly soon.

Of course, that’s what UK-alum Rex Chapman is saying, who is reportedly very much plugged into the UK basketball scene. Chapman took to Twitter to “report” that Calipari to the Lakers is pretty much a “done deal”.

The Los Angeles Lakers, however, moved quickly to dispel the rumor Monday night.

Quite frankly, a move like this wouldn’t exactly be surprising but it also wouldn’t be expected. The Lakers are expected to make some huge facelifting moves in the next year and a half, but I’m not sure if that centers around hiring a big name college coach, who is most notable for recruiting.

The Lakers still haven’t decided Mike D’Antoni’s future yet (if you’re willing to believe the reports out of LA), but you have to figure that LA is going to make a coaching change this offseason or next offseason. Still, that doesn’t mean they would dip their ink in the college ranks.

However, Calipari would be a “power move”. He is one of the hottest names in the business right now, and after what the New York Knicks pulled off (in bringing in Phil Jackson), maybe that’s the route the Lakers elect to go — making a headline-grabbing splash in the process.

Calipari was asked about the “rumor” after the game:

HE DIDN’T SAY NO!!
