NBA Rumors: Carmelo Anthony, Knicks Brass Set To Meet

NBA Rumors

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal‘s Chris Herring, Carmelo Antony is schedule to sit down with New York Knicks team president Phil Jackson Thursday night to discuss his potential free agency plans this summer.

Carmelo Anthony is slated to sit down with Knicks team president Phil Jackson Thursday night in what figures to be the final meeting between the star forward and team executives before Anthony decides whether to enter free agency this summer, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Jackson, who will be joined by new head coach Derek Fisher and general manager Steve Mills, is expected to lay out how both Anthony and the organization could benefit from the 30-year-old opting in for the final year of his contract.

Their main assertion: Were Anthony to begin his free-agency process next summer, as opposed to this summer, he could potentially earn more money because he’d be eligible to earn a higher maximum value—close to $140 million over five years, rather than $129 million—in his next contract. For the team, there would be the added benefit of better calculating how much salary-cap space would be available to accommodate another star player or two.

Anthony has until June 23 to decide, and notify the Knicks, whether he will opt out of his current deal, which is worth $23.5 million, to become a free agent this summer. Or he can opt in and play out his deal, and become a free agent next summer.

Earlier today, the New York Daily News‘ Frank Isola reported that Melo still plans on opting out of his Knicks contract this summer. It appears that Melo is probably going to inform Jackson and Fisher of his decision.

Carmelo Anthony hasn’t wavered from his year-long intent to become a free agent on July 1st despite Phil Jackson’s hopes to keep Anthony under contract through the 2014-15 season.

Barring a dramatic change of heart, Anthony will opt out of his contact and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, the Daily News has learned.

All this comes one day after a report broke that the Miami Heat intend to pursue Anthony this summer. The plot thickens.
