The Cleveland Cavaliers surprised nearly everyone by selecting Anthony Bennett with the No. 1 overall pick in last season’s NBA Draft. They may do more surprising this season, however, it may not come through the way of the draft.
According to Fox Sports’ Sam Amico, the Cleveland Cavaliers are discussing the possibility of trading Dion Waiters. On top of that, Waiters’ camp believes that either he or Kyrie Irving will be traded.
I don’t think this is much of a decision for the Cavaliers. If anyone is getting traded on NBA Draft day, shortly before or after, it’s going to be Waiters.
There is no chance that the Cavs trade Irving, unless it’s for LeBron James. He’s the only exception.
There have been rumblings of the Cavaliers trading Waiters for a while now (during the regular season), but nothing ever materialized. Perhaps now, right before the draft, something does? And, in a draft as deep as this year is projected to be, if the Cavaliers can squeeze out a top-10 pick in exchange for Waiters, I honestly think that Cleveland wins that trade.
Even if it’s a long shot, it’s wise of the Cavaliers to entrain any option. Especially when the risk outweighs the reward, as it does in this situation.
