NBA Rumors: Knicks and Mavs Closing in on Trade

NBA Rumors

From USA Today:

The deal, which is still being discussed and could change, would send Chander and Knicks point guard Raymond Felton to the Mavericks in exchange for Dallas center Samuel Dalembert, point guard Jose Calderon, shooting guard Wayne Ellington, 21-year-old point guard Shane Larkin and the 34th and 51st pick in Thursday’s draft.

The New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks appear to be on the verge of this off-season’s first trade, and it involves plenty of pieces.

It has been made note of multiple times that Phil Jackson wanted to trade Raymond Felton this off-season, going as far as to tell him that in person.

Tyson Chandler‘s name was floated around in trade rumors, but it was never anything too serious. He has a desirable, expiring contract of $14 million that would give the Mavericks additional cap flexibility next off-season, when another wave of top free agents will hit the market.

From the Knicks’ end, it would give them a solid option at point guard in Jose Calderon. He has been the ball distributor that this team has long needed. The only question with this is the salary that would be taken on if this trade goes through. He is owed at least $7 million in each of the next three season. Phil Jackson has made it known before that he would like to clear cap space for next year’s free agency, but this does not really do that. Maybe something else could be in store with plenty of time in the off-season remaining.

Acquiring Shane Larkin gives the Knicks a young point guard to groom and develop behind Calderon. He has showed flashes of talent, but bounced back and forth between the D-League and the NBA after he had ankle surgery.

Samuel Dalemebert should give the Knicks a solid option at center to split time with another player. It has been rumored that Wayne Ellington could be coming back in the trade too.

The Knicks will also be receiving two picks tomorrow, as recently reported by Yahoo! NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski.

The NBA off-season is about to open with a bang.
