NBA Trade Rumors: Phoenix Suns more likely to deal Isaiah Thomas rather than Goran Dragic

More from NBA Rumors

Perhaps the Phoenix Suns are not looking to trade Goran Dragic after all, despite what the recent rumor mill has indicated.

Gery Woelfel, of the Racine Journal Times, first reported that the Suns were reportedly seeking a first-round pick in exchange for Dragic. While that may in fact be accurate, ESPN’s Marc Stein is now reporting that the Phoenix Suns are more likely to deal Isaiah Thomas, the team’s free agent signing from just last summer, than they are to deal upcoming unrestricted free agent Goran Dragic.

"[via ESPN — Twitter]Word is Suns more apt to try to move IThomas before trade deadline, to restore last season’s roster balance, rather than surrender GDragicSuns understandably want lots for Dragic. Of course, if they find deal to ship out Thomas and then Dragic can’t be re-signed, PG depth gone"

Suns general manager recently brought up the team’s roster imbalance and said that there could be moves had in order to correct the problem, though, that’s much easier said than done. Especially, when you have three starting-quality point guards that are cluttering the backcourt.

"[via Arizona Sports, H/T CBS Sports]“I think our roster balance is a little off, and that’s my fault,” Suns GM Ryan McDonough told Burns and Gambo on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Wednesday. “We are a little too backcourt heavy, especially in terms of guys who, you know, I think you’d define primarily as scorers in the backcourt.“So I think at some point we’ll need to balance that out, try to get a little more size, a little more frontcourt scoring and rebounding.”…“At the same time it’s a challenge because we do have talented players, they’ve all had success individually and team success in the NBA,” he said, “so those are some of the decisions we’ll kind of mull over the next week or so and we’ll see where we are on the 19th next week.”"

The only problem with trading Thomas before next week’s NBA trade deadline is the fact that Dragic can simply walk from the team this summer, leaving the squad extremely thin at the point guard spot. Which is currently considered a strong area for the team right now.

This is, the Suns are in a position where they can pretty much shop anyone on their roster, to gauge the interest if nothing else.

Ultimately, Phoenix could end up standing pat as the NBA trade deadline passes next week, let Dragic walk in the summer — or orchestrate a sign and trade to still get assets — and address their need for depth up front during free agency in the summer.

Phoenix has a myriad of options — and no one has any clear idea of what they’re thinking right now. Which is a good thing if you’re the Suns.
