The Golden State Warriors blew out the Spurs at Oracle Arena, and in doing so they may have already sealed another NBA Championship

41. Final. 90. 29. 120

Going into their Monday night contest, the San Antonio Spurs appeared for all the world to be the Golden State Warriors’ kryptonite.

The Spurs won two of three meetings against the Warriors last year and have won an incredible 20-plus  straight games when the teams have met in San Antonio.

If that wasn’t enough, the Spurs won the free-agency sweepstakes in adding LaMarcus Aldridge in a move that looked to make them nearly invincible.

None of it mattered, as the Warriors blew out the Spurs at home in a game that saw a dazzling performance from Stephen Curry. The league MVP put the Defensive Player of the Year in Kawhi Leonard on skates in one of the best moves of the night.

By the way, this is their third jaw-dropping performance in eight days. To recap, this is what the Warriors have done recently:

  • def. Cavaliers 132-98
  • def. Bulls 125-94
  • def. Spurs 120-90

You’re reading that correctly. That is three victories by at least 30 points each.

Another fact, they have also won both meetings against the Toronto Raptors, who are second in the East.

The Warriors have been the best team in the NBA this season, that is nothing new.

But the level at which they are just throttling the other “elite” teams in the league is mind-boggling. The ways in which they nullified Aldridge to just five points, for example, is among the more confounding facts.

On any given night, the Warriors can out-execute any team. But the x-factor of Curry or Klay Thompson going off is what may lead the Warriors to the coveted 73-9 record.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

In Monday’s contest, Curry had a season-high 37 points. Almost unheard of considering that containing him had to be part of Gregg Popovich’s strategy.

If it can be believed, they only got their head coach back on Friday night. While Steve Kerr has been out recovering from back-surgery, assistant Luke Walton has been at the helm as the team had the best start in NBA history.

Barring a cataclysmic turn of events in Oakland, the only question that remains is whether or not the Warriors can reach the historic mark of set by the Michael Jordan‘s 95-96 Chicago Bulls of winning 72 games.

Golden State is easily on track to go down as one of the best teams in league history, but their level of focus will be put to the test for the second half of the season. While the team is on fire, losses to teams like Detroit and Milwaukee show that they are still vulnerable to an upset on any given night.

There is also the looming test of the playoffs where teams will be given the chance to adjust to the Warriors’ style of play over a seven-game series.

As far as the regular season, the next big date for the Golden State Warriors is against the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 6. The explosive duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook pose a stern challenge for the defending champions and their team as a whole is the dark horse to win the West.

Finally, there are three more match-ups with the Spurs on the schedule in the final stretch of the season.  Now, it just needs to be seen if they will still be on pace to win 73 games before that time comes.
