When you talk about the worst front offices in the teams that come up are usually the Kings, Nets, 76ers; but let me tell you why it’s the Chicago Bulls

So let’s take a look. On the surface, the Chicago Bulls seem fine.

They have a star in Jimmy Butler, they have their picks and are a playoff team (at the moment). Looking at the usual suspects of shaky organizations, the Brooklyn Nets, Sacramento Kings and Philadelphia 76ers all…well…suck. Blatantly.

There’s no question that the Chicago Bulls would beat all of them in a 7-game set, easily.

The thing is, those teams I listed, they all have futures, at least something to build with. What do the Bulls have outside of Butler? They just traded Doug McDermott, Rondo is bad and won’t be on the roster next seas, Dwyane Wade is old, draining an absurd amount of their cap and probably won’t be on the roster next year either.

To top it off, their key piece, Butler, isn’t a young prospect anymore. He’ll be 28 before the start of next season. While 28 still seems like a young age for an NBA player, the fact that Chicago has no other key pieces in place hurts. Factor in 2-3 years of developing young talent that Chicago gets in the NBA Draft this season, and Butler will probably be 30 or 31 when this team is finally ready to contend.

And that’s IF the Bulls can hit in the draft.

That leads me to my next point. The Bulls have no young talent to work with and have been bad at drafting in recent memory. Who have they drafted that has been remotely quality over the last few seasons besides Butler? On top of that, who have they brought in via free agency?  My point. They have no track record of getting things done to help Jimmy Buckets.

Speaking on that topic of free agency, the Bulls have no cap. In 2017-18, the Chicago Bulls will be giving Robin Lopez/Dwyane Wade (player option)/Rondo a share of about $52M of their cap. For three average at best, but most likely below average players. Oh and Lopez is locked in until 2019. So where will they find this money to build around Butler?

The Chicago Bulls are basically in basketball purgatory.

They don’t want to deal Butler, so they will keep him and not be able to afford to sign players around him because of preexisting contracts with average players.

Not only that, but since they will keep all these players, they will be forever a 6-8th seed, not being good enough to contend nor get a quality a pick.

That is why they have are in the worst spot in the NBA.
