Unlike the previous four games, highlighted by finesse and sharpshooting, Game 5 was all about physicality and endurance. And Denver endured.

Denver never trailed and that can be attributed to their incredible defense, keeping Golden State off the scoreboard, and allowing them to really push the break early and effectively leading by as much as 22 points. The Warriors could not match the Nuggets’ toughness either, getting knocked around, especially Stephen Curry who met more than his fair share of solid screens.

Perhaps that played a key role in Curry displaying his first mortal performance of the series. He was limited to 15 points on 7-19 shooting, and made his first and only three pointer with just over five minutes to play in the game.

Key notes:

All five of Denver’s starters scored in double figures and Andre Miller scored 11 points off the bench. Denver has played better throughout this series, even in their losses, when everybody is touching the ball. They put themselves in better position to win by spreading the ball around.

If there’s anything for Denver to worry about, it’s that they let a lead that had been as much as 22 points slip away and had to fight to the buzzer essentially, despite Stephen Curry’s ineffectiveness. In addition to that, Golden State still shot higher percentages, though only slightly, from the field and from three. This shows that Denver has to play pretty much perfect basketball to beat this Golden State team. Looking back to Games 2 and 3, Denver did not play poorly at all. Golden State was just that much better. That places more pressure on Denver in the next game or two.

Be sure to sound off with your thoughts and comments in the box below or on my Twitter @JohnYJArmstrong.

“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.”

In a piece written for Sports Illustrated by the man himself, Jason Collins, a free-agent center who played for the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards this past season, has become the first active NBA player to openly reveal his sexuality as a gay man.

“I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation,” Collins wrote. “I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, “I’m different.” If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.” (SI.com)

You can read the piece in its entirety by clicking here.

Collins played 32 games for the Boston Celtics this past season. He was dealt before the trade deadline along with Leandro Barbosa to the Washington Wizards in a move to acquire Jordan Crawford.

Over his 14-year NBA career, Jason has also suited up for the Atlanta Hawks, New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves. He has career averages of 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Since his reveal, the outpouring of love and support from the world of social media has been tremendous. There have been ignorant and naive comments here and there, but for the most part, fans, fellow athletes and members of the media have handled this news with the respect and care that it deserves.

This is a landmark moment in professional sports, and it should be treated as such.

It took a great deal of courage for Jason Collins to come out to the world.

Jason Collins is a hero.
