Another Championship ring for the Miami Heat this season could signal the end of James Jones’ tenure in the National Basketball Association.

He’s battled numerous injuries over the course of his career (played in over 60 games just once in the past six years), but despite having appeared in just 21 games this season for the Heat, Jones says that he’s fine physically, according to a report by HOOPSWORLD.

“I feel good this year,” Jones told HOOPSWORLD. “I’m not playing as much, so physically I feel good. I feel better than I have the last couple of seasons. Right now I‘m concerned with winning a championship this year and if we win it this year [retirement] will be a great conversation to have.”

He contemplated retirement after Miami won the 2012 NBA Championship, but ultimately decided against it.

“There was,” Jones said confirming the retirement reports from last summer. “Last year it was a serious consideration. It was one of those things where you understand that you’re at your peak and physically after a grueling season like that your mind tells you a lot of things but your body speaks to you differently. So after having a summer to recover and heal from my various injuries, I felt good physically and I wanted to give it another chance.”

Jones has played for three other teams since entering the league back in 2005 (Portland TrailBlazers, Indiana Pacers, Phoenix Suns), with career averages of 5.8 points and 2.1 rebounds. His 40.1% three-point percentage ranks 32nd all-time. His biggest individual claim to fame is winning the 2011 Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout at All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles.

Playing just 4.2 minutes a game this season has been frustrating, but James understands the hand that he’s been dealt.

“It’s bittersweet,” Jones said. “I’ve been blessed to be on a team who is very competitive with some of the world’s best talent. So evidently there are not as many minutes for me. But I’m a pro and you know there’s not much you can do when you say you’re playing behind future Hall of Famers.”

With the Miami Heat heavily favored to win their second-straight NBA title in 2013, going out on top as a champion could be Jones’ final curtain call.
