According to numerous reports, the Washington Wizards will be sending guard Jordan Crawford to the Boston Celtics in exchange for guard Leandro Barbosa.

Rookie Fab Melo was originally thought to be the Celtics player headed to D.C, but that ultimately never came into fruition.

Celtics will send the Leandro Barbosa expiring contract to the Wizards for Jordan Crawford, league source tells Y! Sports.

Through 43 games, Crawford is averaging 13.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He’s been a DNP over the past four games for Washington, as a recent shooting slump (41% from the field on the year) has cost him significant minutes in the rotation. Jordan is owed a little under $7 million over the next three seasons. His contract expires in 2014-15.

Barbosa will miss the rest of the regular season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Before his injury, he was averaging 5.2 points and 1.4 assists for Boston. He’s in the last year of his $1.2 million dollar deal, which will expire at the end of the season.

UPDATE: The Celtics will also include center Jason Collins as part of the deal.

GRADE THE TRADE (WASHINGTON WIZARDS): C

Washington made this move strictly for financial reasons. Barbosa will more than likely never suit up for the team, as he’s currently out of action with a torn ACL. I doubt the Wizards have any intention to re-sign him to a new deal during the summer.

Jordan was rotting on the bench as of late anyways, so no harm, no foul.

GRADE THE TRADE (BOSTON CELTICS):  B -

The Celtics desperately needed more depth at the guard positions, after losing both Barbosa and All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo to season-ending injuries.

Crawford isn’t a prototypical point guard by any means, which is something the roster could use at the moment. Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee and Jason Terry are essentially combo guards pretending to be facilitators at the one spot, so Jordan doesn’t bring much to the table that those three don’t already provide.

In 31 games Crawford played without teammate John Wall, he averaged a team-high 15.6 points, 4.6 assists and 4.0 rebounds. Since his return, his numbers and minutes dropped across the board.

He’s a healthy backcourt player, and that’s all he really needs to be for now.

The Boston Celtics are running out of point guards, and fast.

Late in the third quarter of Boston’s clash with the Charlotte Bobcats earlier this evening, guard Leandro Barbosa came up limping on a non-contact play after driving to the rim.

He was carried to the locker room by a trainer and one of his teammates.

The severity of the injury was unknown at the time, but Barbosa was clearly favoring his left knee.

Kevin Garnett informed reporters after the game that the team was told in the locker room that Leandro would be done for the season.

An official diagnosis has yet to be made.

The Celtics’ had their seven-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Bobcats, losing tonight’s game 94-91.

Barbosa played 12 minutes prior to getting hurt, scoring three points on 1 for 6 shooting from the field.

On the season, he was averaging 5.3 points and 1.4 assists a game for Boston. He had scored in double-figures in each of the team’s last three games.

While Leandro wasn’t a huge part of the Celtics’ rotation, he at least provided some much needed depth at the guard positions. All-Star Rajon Rondo recently went down with an ACL injury which will keep him out for the remainder of the season, as well.

With Leandro going down, Boston is now left with just three healthy guards in Jason Terry, Courtney Lee and Avery Bradley.

I expect the Celtics’ to make some sort of move over the next week or so to bring in another point guard, as they are certainly dropping like flies in Beantown.
