0 to 100 – Real Quick
During the preseason of the 1997-98 season, David Robinson hurt his back. Only six games after he returned, he broke his foot and missed the remainder of the season. The Spurs spiraled to the third-worst record, only to win the lottery and draft some scrub from Wake Forest.
Retired a Champ
Before the 2002-03 season, and entering the final year of his contract, David Robinson announced that he would play his final season and retire. In his announcement, Robinson stated, “I’m just going to enjoy everything, my teammates, this will be my last time to spend time with them in the locker room and really invest my life into theirs. All that stuff will be a little bit sweeter this year.”
He certainly didn’t play like someone who was past his prime, as he finished 3rd in defensive rating, 6th in total rebound percentage, and, oh yeah, scored 13 points and grabbed 17 boards in his final game – Game 6 victory over the Nets for a second championship.
