Record: 559–183

*One NCAA Championship

The amount of success Self has had at Kansas is kind of staggering. Since Self took over the team in the 03-04 season, he’s lead the team to eleven straight Big 12 regular season championships. In that same time span, Kansas has only lost nine total games at home, with an overall record of 190-9. That’s insane. Given that track record, it’d be utterly asinine to doubt Self’s ability as a basketball coach.

That said, trying to figure how his style would translate to the pro level is a bit tricky. He’s consistently led strong defensive units. In Kansas’ twelve seasons under Self, they’ve finished in the kenpom defensive top-10 eight times.

By comparison, his offenses have never been quite as good and his offensive style isn’t one that meshes well with modern NBA strategy. Self’s have been offensive mantra has never changed, he’s going to try and beat you through the post. Throw on Kansas tape from 10 years ago and you’ll see the same high-low motion that they run today. He plays two bigs at all times, rarely tinkering with small ball lineups despite having the personnel to do so in recent years.

Self’s never shown the creativity to make be believe in him as a NBA coach. He’s probably best-suited staying as an awesome NCAA one.
