Sacramento Kings

The Kings are 3-10 at the moment and are being outscored by nearly 12 points per game this season. It’s also a weirdly constructed team, with a mix of 35-year-olds and 19-year-olds.

Let’s begin to sort it out.

Sacramento has both of its picks in this years draft, but only one-second rounder the year after. Plus, they are in a pretty good spot salary wise. Since they have no first in 2019, they should tank this year and make sure they nail the draft.

Kosta Koufos, Garett Temple, and Vince Carter are all free agents this summer. All are solid players, who can help teams, especially the first two. I would look to move them at the deadline for picks and young players, but that would likely be easier said than done.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

Zach Randolph has three years left on his deal, and is on a pretty unmovable contract. So, Sacramento kind of has to eat that.

Then, there is the veteran who is just not playing well. George Hill signed a sizeable three-year deal, and he has not delivered. Plus, behind him is promising young point guard De’Aron Fox. Sacramento may need to look to move Hill as well, but I would keep him for now, try to get his confidence back up.

Hopefully, next year if they keep him he will accept a reserve role behind Fox. But don’t count on that.

There is some exciting young talent here with Fox, Buddy Hield, Bodan Bogdanovic, Skai Labissiere and Willie Cauley-Stein. Can Dave Joerger start this group, please? Yes, it would be awful on defense, but some point you have to see what you got. Like in Phoenix and Brooklyn, this is a big year for player development. Sacramento needs all these players to take a step forward this season. Probably only Fox has star potential.

Then there is Harry Giles, the rookie who is out with a knee injury. A high school star full of potential, but also a serious injury risk. Don’t forget the name though; the Kings could have a steal here.

The key for Sacramento over the next few years will be development. They have talent; they just need to make sure and not spoil it – see DeMarcus Cousins.
