2018 NBA Draft Player Profile: Luka Doncic

Scoring
At 19 years of age Luka Doncic averaged the second most points per 40 minutes, with 26.44. The only player who averaged more was Alexey Shved who spent five seasons in the NBA, most notably with the Timberwolves. Even though Doncic is not a crazy athlete by any means, he is a talented scorer and a deadly pull up jump shooter.
He excels at stopping on a dime, and this really helps him create space for his mid range pull ups. Here’s Doncic against former NBA veteran forward Jason Thompson. Doncic isolates Thompson, using a number of hesitations moves to try and get Thompson off balance. Doncic drives right at Thompson and gets to his pull up so quickly as Thompson is unable to get his hand up.
Another way Doncic can get his pull up jump shot off is his amazing hesitations moves that lead to his step back jump shot. Here’s Doncic breaking a Barcelona defenders ankles. That step back can also set up plays like this one on former NBA player Victor Claver.
Another standout part in Doncic’s scoring is how smart of a scorer he is. Doncic showcases his basketball IQ frequently passing, but he also flashes it when scoring as well. He likes to take advantages of mismatches the defense gives him.
