Boston Celtics
Why it makes sense: If he really wanted to, I don’t think anyone would argue with the idea of Kyrie Irving re-signing with the Celtics. Boston may have had somewhat of a disappointing season, but there’s no question that this team will get better, if nothing else, via internal development from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
However, there’s also a chance that the Celtics could jump in on the pursuit for Anthony Davis too. That should count for something too. If Boston could make it happen, why wouldn’t Kyrie want to re-sign to play alongside Anthony Davis?
Why it doesn’t make sense: Throughout this season, there were real signs that Kyrie wasn’t happy with his current situation. No matter what he may say, his actions often spoke louder than his comments. I’m not sure if it was his fit alongside this team’s core, or perhaps even not seeing eye-to-eye with Brad Stevens, something wasn’t right.
The Celtics were arguably the most talented – and deepest – team in the Eastern Conference but were eliminated with ease in the second round at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks. Something clearly wasn’t right, and perhaps he’s over it and ready to begin the next chapter of his career.
