The Bulls pick up Coby White
It feels strange to say this about a team picking 7th in the draft, but the Chicago Bulls really didn’t have a lot of needs coming into last night. They appear to be set up front with Wendell Carter Jr. and Lauri Markkanen and on the wing, they’ve got Otto Porter Jr. and their free-agent prize from a year ago, Zach LaVine.
The gaping hole was at the point guard slot. Although LaVine proved himself to be a prolific scorer last season, he didn’t show much in the way of playmaking for others. And the Kris Dunn experiment fizzled out once and for all.
In so many ways, Coby White can be the perfect lead guard for this young group. Roy Williams typically likes his teams to play fast, and without inhibitions. White is lightning quick and can use that speed to cut into the teeth of the defense, which will open up looks from the perimeter for the likes of Markkanen, Porter, and LaVine. And in Carter Jr., he’s got an excellent dancing partner in the screening game.
This team is likely too young and inexperienced to make any noise next season but once these guys grow into their roles, and with a little more seasoning, they could be a threat to some of the incumbents in the East.
