October Takeaway: Who Is Kendrick Nunn?
That’s a serious question, I really don’t know who this guy is. Based on a google search I did after his first game I found out that he was a prolific scorer at Oakland in college and had a solid year in the G-League last year. I’m a pretty big basketball nerd, but unless you were locked into the 2017 Horizon League conference race or have a relative that played with him on the Santa Cruz Warriors, then I doubt you know too much about him either.
I finally watched Nunn play for the first time the other night against the Hawks. Honestly, I went into it under the assumption that the numbers he’s putting up are a fluke. I didn’t plan on being impressed by him, but I was dead wrong.
Look, he’s probably not going to keep averaging over 20 points per game on 56 percent effective field goal percentage, but I don’t think he’s going to be disappearing any time soon. With Jimmy Butler‘s return, the backcourt is a little more crowded and has some terrific depth with Nunn, Goran Dragic, and Tyler Herro all playing significant minutes. So maybe the opportunities won’t be as plentiful all season, but Nunn is for real and it looks like the Heat got an absolute bargain when they brought him in.
