7. Minnesota Timberwolves – Jonathan Isaac
I might be higher on Jonathan Isaac than most, but before he injured his knee on New Year’s Day, it was looking like he had become the dominant defensive force that he was expected to be when he was drafted.
At just under 7-feet tall and with a 7-foot-1 wingspan, Isaac’s length is second to none. Combine that with his fluid athleticism and a few seasons of game experience and the result is that Isaac is now one of the most disruptive defensive forces in the NBA.
He ranked fourth in the NBA in defensive PIPM behind only Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez, and Rudy Gobert. He was also tied for second in blocks per game and tied for 11th in steals per game despite averaging less than 30 minutes of playing time.
His offensive game is still a work in progress, especially when it comes to shooting the ball from distance. But Isaac was enjoying his most efficient offensive season yet before he went down with the knee injury, showing a real commitment to using his length and athleticism to get to the basket while he continues to work on his jump shot.
Isaac was shut down for the season after the injury so it’s unlikely he’ll come back even if the NBA resumes play, but if he can show some growth as a shooter next season he’ll be one of the most coveted young players in basketball.
