The Spurs trading the No. 1 pick

It’s not going to happen but if the San Antonio Spurs were to trade the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, there’s no question that it would send shockwaves throughout the rest of the league. It would turn the NBA Draft on its head and it would be the big story for the offseason. But that’ is unlikely to happen. Victor Wembanyama is a generational talent that the Spurs should roll the dice on after winning the NBA Draft Lottery.

He could mark the start of a new winning era in San Antonio and could be one of the next faces of the NBA. What is interesting to discuss is what the possible return package would be if the Spurs traded the No. 1 overall pick. You’d have to imagine that the Spurs would be able to get an established star or even superstar with a handful of future draft picks.

I suppose you can think of the packages that the Utah Jazz got in exchange for Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell last offseason and then tack on a few more pieces.

The Spurs are not trading Wemby, but it would be the story of possibly a generation if they did. Could you imagine if the Cleveland Cavaliers traded the No. 1 overall pick (rights to LeBron James) in 2003?
