Why Clint Capela makes sense for the Phoenix Suns
The Suns add a strong rim protector in Clint Capela who should help anchor the team defensively on the interior, as well should help the team in terms of rebounding as well. Ayton averaged 11 rebounds per game (14.9 per 36) this past year, compared to Ayton’s 10 rebounds per game and 11.8 rebounds per 36. I do believe that Ayton is a better offensive player than Capela, but I believe Capela is a better-fit skill-set-wise for what the Suns need alongside KD and Booker.
The deal also helps the Suns lessen their luxury tax hit. In fact, the Suns could just about get all the way down to right at the salary cap by waiving Chris Paul and Cam Payne (and thus taking the roughly $19 million of non-guaranteed money in their deals off the books) if they elect to go that route.
Recent reports have emerged that the Suns are potentially looking at waiving Paul, which could play into this move as well. Either way, this move would help the Suns when it comes to potentially avoiding the luxury tax.
