Eastern Conference 5th seed

5. Cleveland Cavaliers

I’m a little torn on the Cleveland Cavaliers heading into the start of the season. On one hand, I believe that they could take a big step forward and finish as a top 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. I feel like that could absolutely be their best-case scenario heading into this season. Alternatively, deep down, I think there’s a better chance they end up taking a bit of a step back this year. Not a big one, just a small one. Here’s my reasoning.

I don’t believe the Cavs’ timelines all fit together. I think Donovan Mitchell is a superstar that is ready to win now and the rest of the Cavs’ core isn’t. I believe that’s one of the reasons we saw this team flop in the postseason. If Darius Garland and Evan Mobley don’t make their respective star jumps this season, it will continue to be a factor for the team.

And if it doesn’t show during the regular season, which could very well be the case, I have a feeling that it’s once again going to show up in the postseason. The Cavs’ future is bright but they still may be a year or two ahead of their natural progression.
