There are at least six fringe contenders in each conference that will regret not making a splash move at the NBA Trade Deadline.

Now that the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline dust has begun to settle, it's natural to look back at some of the teams that elected not to make a big move. Of those teams, which will quickly come to regret their decisions to be inactive at the deadline? We explore six of those teams that could be kicking themselves for not pulling the trigger to improve their roster when they had the chance.

6 fringe contenders that will regret not making a splash move at the NBA Trade Deadline

Sacramento Kings

Curiously, the Sacramento Kings held back on making any type of splash move ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline. Considering that a couple of months before the deadline it was reported that the Kings were expected to be somewhat aggressive in pursuing a move, it was at least a bit shocking that didn't end up playing out.

Nevertheless, looking at the standings, it's hard to envision the Kings making a stark move up the West after standing pat at the deadline. Especially when you consider that both the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns, two teams the Kings are battling within that second tier of the West, make improvements at the deadline.

The Kings could quickly regret not adding a piece for the stretch run if they find themselves having to play their way into the playoffs via the Western Conference Play-In Tournament. With how things stand in the conference, there's a very good chance that's exactly how this season plays out for Sacramento.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. They've won nine games in a row and 17 of their last 18 contests. They're ranked second in the Eastern Conference standings and appear to be the only team with a shot to catch the Boston Celtics. Not making a splash move at the trade deadline, however, could be viewed as somewhat of a missed opportunity for a team that is beginning to play its best basketball of the season.

I can't help but wonder how much higher of a ceiling this team could have right now had they made even a slight improvement to the roster. I'd have to imagine if the Cavs end up losing prematurely in the postseason that they're going to look back at the trade deadline as a missed opportunity.

There's a chance the Cavs still haven't played their best basketball of the season. However, not making a move at the deadline was a curious move from the team. Especially considering how many of the other East contenders did.

Orlando Magic

As one of the more pleasant surprises in the Eastern Conference this season, the playoffs are in play for the Orlando Magic for the first time in a very long while. And Orlando could've gone a long way in solidifying themselves as a playoff contender had they elected to make a move for a veteran talent at the deadline. In the end, that didn't happen for the Magic. Instead, Orlando decided to stand pat and not make a move.

Considering that nearly every team in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference playoff picture decided to make a move at the trade deadline, the decision to stand pat could end up costing the Magic in a big way down the stretch. Orlando has a young roster and their best years are certainly ahead of them, but I can't help but feel that this team is going to feel as if they let an opportunity pass them by if they stumble a bit down the stretch.

The Magic didn't have to make a splash move at the trade deadline but they easily could've. They may end up regretting that decision when they possibly find themselves having to play their way into the postseason.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers notably were one of the few teams that didn't make a move at the NBA Trade Deadline. While there's an argument to be made that it was the best possible decision for the future of the team, it's hard to argue that is going to help this team down the stretch. Most fans aren't concerned about the team making a decision for the future. Even less so when that team has LeBron James on the roster.

In short, the Lakers may have punted on this season for a complete unknown that may or may not happen during the offseason. That can't make Lakers fans happy and it may have not sat well with LeBron, who only has a few more years before the end of his career. When it comes to this season, I'd imagine there's a pretty good chance that there's going to be a feeling of regret for this team when they quickly realize they don't have the talent - or consistent play - to compete with the other contenders in the conference.

The Lakers entered this season with the hopes of winning a championship. Short of something changing drastically soon, that doesn't appear as if that's going to be the case. And not making a splash move at the trade deadline could be one of the bigger reasons why.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat may have made their move for Terry Rozier a few weeks before the NBA Trade Deadline but it's hard to look at this team and suggest that he's going to solve all of their issues heading into the final push toward the postseason. The Heat still lacks the necessary size to compete with the other elite Eastern Conference teams and it's hard to envision how that's going to change between now and the playoffs.

Not to mention that it's not even a guarantee that the Heat are going to get to the playoffs. Right now, the Heat is 8th in the Eastern Conference standings and two games back of the Indiana Pacers. Not making an additional move at the trade deadline has all but eliminated this team's chances of making another deep playoff run.

Could it happen? Sure. But the East is 100 percent more talented than it was last season and the Heat look like a worst team at the moment. Maybe something changes over the course of the last two months of the regular season before the playoffs but I have a hard time believing that at this point.

Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have won four games in a row and six of their last seven. Still, they're ranked 10th in the Western Conference standings and five games back of the sixth seed. In other words, the Warriors have a lot of ground to make up in the final stretch of the season if they want to avoid missing the playoffs entirely or having to play their way into the dance via the Play-In Tournament.

It's almost as if a splash move at the trade deadline would've helped the team down the stretch. However, the Warriors ended up standing pat. It remains to be seen how much of a mistake that decision ends up being. I suppose the Warriors have the ability to flip the switch down the stretch but with the way they've played this season, I wouldn't bet on that happening.

After whispers that the Warriors were going to possibly make a bold move at the trade deadline, the front office decided not to - or they didn't find the right deal. With how inconsistent this team has been, I firmly believe a splash move at the deadline could've gone a long way in sparking this team down the stretch. They clearly didn't think it was all that necessary.
