NBA Trade Rumors: There are four teams that should be willing to offer the kitchen sink, and then some, for Lauri Markkanen ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline.
Less than two months out from the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline, the market of who will possibly move traded is already being set. Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Alex Caruso, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, Kelly Olynyk, and others are some of the bigger names that could be moved over the course of the next few weeks.
However, there could be one more big name added to that list. Lauri Markkanen is officially a name to keep an eye on. While the Utah Jazz may not be all out shopping their All-Star forward, they are open to listening to offers. If one blows them away, perhaps Markkanen is a player that could be traded.
Assuming that is the case, we'll explore four teams that should be willing to make huge offers for Markkanen heading into the deadline.
Miami Heat
In a vacuum, the Miami Heat would be an interesting potential landing spot for Lauri Markkanen if he does end up being shopped at some point before the NBA Trade Deadline. He'd be an interesting fit next to Bam Adebayo in the frontcourt and would take a ton of scoring pressure off of Jimmy Butler, which is a must considering he's on the backend of his career.
The big question is whether or not the Heat have enough draft capital to get a deal done for Markkanen. They could find a path toward offering three future first-round picks, which might be what it takes to pry Markkanen away from Utah, but who knows if that's a package that both sides would be open to accepting.
A frontcourt trio of Jimmy, Markkanen, and Bam could do some damage in the Eastern Conference. And perhaps he could be that final piece that the Heat has been missing.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder are a natural potential landing spot for Lauri Markkanen. OKC makes sense for the All-Star big man on many fronts. For one, Markkanen fits with the timeline of the Thunder more than he does with Utah's. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the case can be made that OKC is ready to win now. Chet Holmgren's emergence this season, even in what is technically his rookie season, has helped push the Thunder to a top 3 team in the Western Conference standings.
There's an argument to be made that OKC remains a piece away from being a real threat to make a deep run in the West playoffs this season, Markkanen could offer that scoring punch that the team needs on the wing, playing off of SGA and Holmgren. Markkanen could thrive as a second option for the Thunder and could give this team a well-rounded element that they don't currently have on their roster.
The big question is whether OKC believes Markkanen is worthy of an all-in move. Over the past couple of seasons, the Thunder have practiced patience in their build. Now may be the time to get aggressive.
Atlanta Hawks
Making the move for Dejounte Murray a couple of offseasons ago, the belief and hope was that it was a move that would help the Atlanta Hawks take the next developmental step in their progression as a franchise. That hasn't exactly been the case for a team that has been stuck in NBA mediocrity for the past few seasons. After an uneven showing last year, ending in a first-round playoff exit, the Hawks have gotten off to another unenviable start.
There's no guarantee that the Hawks are going to make the playoffs this season and this is a team that very much should have their eyes on making a big move at the NBA Trade Deadline. The Hawks need a move to get them out of this recent rut and something needs to happen if they want to have any shot to be jump-started into the push toward the playoffs.
Perhaps Lauri Markkanen is a name that could get this team going. He'd be an intriuging fit next to Trae Young and Murray and would certainly be a more established wing scorer than what the team already has on its roster.
Sacramento Kings
The Sacramento Kings are expected to be aggressive heading into the NBA Trade Deadline. After the strides the Kings made last season, they're certainly a team that believes it's on the right path toward possible contention in the Western Conference. But if they're going to make that final leap, they're going to have to make a splash move ahead of the stretch run. The Kings are talented enough to finish as a top 6 team in the West standings, but I'm not sure they have sufficient difference-makers to push the Denver Nuggets in a seven-game playoff series.
That's where a move for a player like Lauri Markkanen can come into play. As the Kings continue to wait for Keegan Murray to make the progressional step into stardom, perhaps Markkanen can give the team an added scoring punch on the wing. If Sacramento is serious about winning in the next 1-2 years, this is a move that the Kings have to be considering.
Considering how wide open the West looks, with OKC and Minnesota sitting atop the standings at the moment, the Kings could view this season as the perfect opportunity to go all in on such a move.
