The Miami Heat are expected to sign Briante Weber soon, here’s what they can expect from the 23-year-old defensive-minded point guard

The Miami Heat are expected to sign NBA D-League Standout Briante Weber – probably tomorrow. He’s expected to ink a three-year deal with the Miami Heat, for the league minimum.

Question is, considering that Weber is not a household name in the NBA – yet – it’s not exactly common knowledge what he brings to Miami. Simply put, a defensive-minded point guard that has more than excelled during his time in Sioux Falls (Miami’s D-League team).

He’s a four-year player from VCU that went undrafted in the 2015 – mostly because he suffered a gruesome knee injury in college. He was with the Heat during training camp, but didn’t receive a guaranteed deal from Miami prior to the start of the season. He played with the Heat’s D-League team this season, averaging 10.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game. He also helped lead the Skyforce to the top seed in the D-League playoffs and a first round sweep of the Westchester Knicks.

During his time with the Skyforce, Weber has drawn comparisons to Patrick Beverley. Ironically, another player the Heat had in training camp prior to him making it in the League with the Houston Rockets.

This is what NBA D-League writer Chris Reichert (Upside Motor) had to say of Weber:

"[via Twitter]Defensive pest, plays with endless energy and attacks the basket very well."

Weber is also part of this new era guard, that is also super athletic – see Russell Westbrook. Not saying that he’s as athletic as Westbrook, because no one is, but he’s built from the same formula.

With ease.

Talking strictly this season, Weber likely won’t contribute much to the Miami Heat. But could be an option off the bench as a defensive-minded guard. However, with the expectations that Tyler Johnson will return in the next few days, the odds of Weber breaking the playoff rotation – even sparingly – is minimal.

The Miami Heat will take him under their wings and work to develop him in their program as they’ve done so with Hassan Whiteside, Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson and others. Weber could still see time in the D-League, perhaps next season, but he should be with the Heat going forward this year.

More sir charles in charge: Heat To Sign Dorell Wright Next?

If nothing else, you should be excited about his potential in the next couple of seasons because of the contract that he signed. The fact that it was for three years tells you that this team sees something in Weber. Perhaps the same thing that they saw in Whiteside and Tyler Johnson.

Miami is also expected to sign Dorell Wright for the remainder of the season. Weber and the Heat’s deal was first reported by Yahoo.
