Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker and Joel Embiid dominated the 2014 NBA Draft headlines coming in, however, there were several other “lesser” storylines that managed to steal some of the draft night spotlight away from the aforementioned mammoths.
In case you missed any of last night’s festivities, here is a running diary of what went down on draft night:
6:22 — Woj is reporting that Noah Vonleh will slide in the draft. This is my surprised face:
6:30 — The Draft is about to begin. Adam Silver is now the NBA Commissioner. This is different…wait, they didn’t boo him. WHAT LIFE IS THIS??
6:40 –– Cleveland Cavaliers select…Andrew Wiggins. The Cavaliers did something right. Finally.
6:46 –– Jabari Parker gets his wish, Bucks select him. Is Parker officially the first player to ever “want” to play in Milwaukee? I think Parker will have the bigger impact next season on the Bucks than Wiggins has on the Cavs.
6:48 — The Sixers are on the clock. This is where it gets interesting.
6:54 — Sixers take Embiid. He’s not happy, to say the least. WOW. Oh, wait. He just didn’t know yet. All good. Nerlens Noel + Joel Embiid could be really good in about two years.
6:57 — Woj is spoiling everything on Twitter. I’m not sure if this sucks or if it’s great.
6:58 –– Perhaps the first surprise of the draft? Aaron Gordon goes No. 4 overall to the Magic. I really thought Orlando would go Dante Exum. I guess that’s why I’m here typing on my laptop and not in the war rooms.
7:05 — I really think Dante Exum is going to be an absolute star in the NBA. I could be wrong, BUT I’M GOING DOWN WITH THE SHIP.
7:10 — Are we going to have the first draft day trade here? Boston is on the clock and Woj hasn’t spoiled the pick yet. Hmmm.
7:11 — Oh, wait. The pick is Marcus Smart. I’m not a fan of this pick at all. Wait, does this mean that Rajon Rondo is getting traded?
7:17 — Julius Randle is now off the board, lands in LA with Kobe. Good luck. Almost had forgot that he was still on the board. Nice pick, I think.
7:23 — I think Nik Stauksas is the best shooter in this draft — absolutely love this kid.
7:25 — Still not trades. This is weird. C’MOM WOJ.
7:28 — Woj hasn’t tweeted anything in 15 minutes. I guess this means a trade is about to go down.
7: 29 — Not too big on Noah Vonleh, but he is a physical freak and has a whole lot of potential. The new Hornets make Vonleh their first pick of the new era.
7:37 — If nothing else, Elfrid Payton has the best hair in the draft. But, I’m not sure how good Payton will be. At least the Sixers didn’t take Saric, for a moment there I thought the were.
7:40 — Word is that Payton may be on the move. Either him or Michael Carter-Williams. We’ll see.
7:42 — Dougie McBuckets is off the board! He lands in Denver. For the record, Doug McDermott has the most potential when it comes to nicknames in this draft.
8:03 — Draft is speeding up, or everything is moving so fast. Philly is getting no assets for next season. they just traded Payton to Orlando For Dario Saric, who won’t come over for another two years. They’ll be in the same position next season.
8:04 — Gary Harris, anyone?
8:15 — The NBA honors Isaiah Austin. Suddenly, my allergies are beginning to act up…
8:27 — Gary Harris still hasn’t been drafted. I thought he was supposed to be one of the safer picks in the draft? We’re getting to the point in the draft where a contender could put together a package to trade up and snag a really good player.
8:38 –– Gary Harris is finally off the board, he goes to the Nuggets. Not sure why the Bulls traded up from McDermott. I’m sure they would’ve loved taking Harris at 19th. Now the attention turns to Shabazz Napier.
8:39 –– ESPN is reporting that the Heat are “actively” trying to move up in the draft in order to select Shabazz Napier.
8:46 — The Toronto Raptors just drafted the Brazilian “Kevin Durant.” I wish I made that up.
8: 50 –– I probably love Mitch McGary as an NBA prospect a little too much. Had a great freshman season, and an injury-plauged sophomore season. Wish he would’ve stayed for one more season at Michigan, but I really like him at 21.
9:07 — Miami doesn’t get Shabazz Napier. LeBron James is probably going to sign with the Charlotte Hornets, obviously.
9:08 — Wait, Hornets just traded Napier to the Miami Heat. LeBron James is one powerful man.
9:26 — The first round is nearly over. There have only been a handful of trades, I’m surprised. Meanwhile, the Sixers have five second round picks. Insane.
That does it for me. Thanks for hanging. Until next time.
