The fact that Wesley Mathews is the tenth best at anything is less about how good he is, and more about how shallow the shooting guard position has become. Outside of his blistering 39.3% hit rate on 6.2 three-point attempt per game, Mathews is a generally unremarkable player. His rebounding and play-making numbers are average, while his defense registers as a significant negative.
Still, he fills a useful role on a Portland team that has come to rely on his floor-spacing and post-up abilities, as his game provides a nice compliment to Lillard and Aldridge, while also remaining steady when the Trailblazer offense stalls. Though Mathews is squarely in his prime at the age of 27, I fully expect either DeMar DeRozan or Klay Thompson to surpass him in 2015.
