Defense Has Regressed

It’s no secret the Hornets have taken a step back defensively.

Last season, they held opponents to a 4th best 97.1 points per game and boasted the 5th best defensive rating in all of the league.

This season, they’ve regressed in both categories, allowing opponents to average 101.1 points per game while ranking 25th in defensive rating, both huge contrasts when compared to their previous numbers.

Per Charlotte Observer’s Rick Bonnell:

"“It’s basic stuff – not running back, not getting our defense set, blown coverages,” said Hornets coach Steve Clifford. “Right now those things are on me. We’re not disciplined and that’s coaching. I just don’t think we’re in the right place… We’re not disciplined on defense at all. We make mistakes and we stop playing.”"

It’s mighty noble for Head Coach Steve Clifford to take the blame, but it’s worth noting their best defender in Michael-Kidd Gilchrist has been sidelined for a good chunk of the season.

His return could help boost their defensive numbers back to what they were last season, but in the meantime, it’s vital Clifford gets his guys more focused on the defensive end of the floor.
