Goran Dragic wanted out of the Phoenix Suns and that’s exactly what he got at the NBA trade deadline a couple of weeks ago. However, after landing with the Miami Heat, there was still doubt as to whether he would actually re-sign long term with his new team.
That doubt can now be put to rest.
Dragic, who’s expected to opt out of final year in his contract this summer to become an unrestricted free agent, told the Palm Beach Post that he intends to sign a multi-year contract with the Miami Heat this summer.
"[via Palm Beach Post]Dragic came to the Heat in a trade from Phoenix two weeks ago and already has determined that he wants to sign a multi-year contract with the team.“That’s my wish,” he said after this morning’s shootaround at Georgetown University. “Right now I’m focused on doing as much as possible this season and make the playoffs, but of course this first 10-15 days here has been a great feeling for me. Unbelievable.”“One of my main wishes was to come to Miami, and so far it’s looking good,” he said. “I’m happy right now. There’s still 22 games, but at this point, that’s what it is.”"
Although, to be fair, he also said that he’s going to explore his options.
"[via Bleacher Report]I’m going to stay in the hotel until the end of the season, and then we’re going to see how the team is going to develop. I just want to be focused on trying to help the team as much as possible get to the playoffs. But at the end of the season, of course I’m going to think about that option of staying. I’m really hoping to stay in Miami because I really like it, but you never know. I’m a free agent, so I’m going to explore my options."
Ultimately, it’s probably going to come down to whether Miami is willing to offer Dragic the contract that he wants or not. And that could mean a max deal.
If a competitor (*cough* Los Angeles Lakers *cough*) is willing to offer Dragic the max contract that his agent will likely pursue, then that’s probably an instance in which he could make the move to Los Angeles to join the Lakers, or any other team that is willing to offer him max money.
Although, I’m not sure if the Lakers — or anyone else for that matter — would be willing to do that.
The Heat are probably going to offer Dragic a nice deal, I just doubt it’ll come via max money. I could be wrong. Still, I’d be very surprised if Dragic isn’t sporting a Miami Heat jersey next season.
