I don’t think there’s anyone that wouldn’t agree with the fact that this Sacramento Kings season has been anything short of weird. Many, though, would go all the way to say that it has been a circus, as would DeMarcus Cousins.
And he couldn’t be more right. From being a potential “sleeper” in the Western Conference early in the season to potentially contend for a possible playoff spot, to now being the laughing stock in the NBA. That usually doesn’t happen in the NBA.
"[via Washington Post]“It’s been a circus, man. It’s been a complete circus,” a flustered Cousins said, when asked to describe this season. “We got off to a hot start. Unfortunately, I got sick, so it ruined the look of the team. I take some blame for that. I know for a fact, if I wouldn’t have gotten sick, things wouldn’t have happened the way it happened. It was no way it could. At the same time, a lot of it is not my fault and we all know why. But this has been a disappointing year.” …“I think I carry more weight than the average player,” Cousins said. “Coming in, I never was in a great situation — coming at such a young age, not really understanding the business. I came in, franchise that’s been doing bad for a long time, I came with my own baggage, some earned, some given to me or whatever.” …“I care; I really care,” he said. “I take my job serious. I love to play the game. It ain’t about the money, not about the fame. I care. The biggest thing I can admit is I’m not perfect and I know that.”"
The Kings started their season with optimism. That was until Sacramento’s front office decided that they had had enough of Mike Malone. They waited until the right time — when the Kings began to lose games, unfairly because DeMarcus Cousins was out of the lineup due to illness — to make the move.

It left many scratching their heads, mostly because Malone was actually making progress with this team. It earned him a firing. The Kings then named an interim head coach, Tyrone Corbin, who coached the team for 28 games, before firing him in favor of George Karl, who reportedly wasn’t the head coach that their star player wanted.
It’s almost as if the Kings’ front office doesn’t know what it wants, or doesn’t want, but at the same time knows that it definitely doesn’t want to surrender any power to any of their players, certainly not to Cousins.
Circus.
Shouldn’t your franchise player and front office be on the same page, or even have a conversation or two on who the next head coach is going to be?
Yes, in a normal functioning organization. That clearly isn’t the Kings. DeMarcus Cousins only crystalized it for us.
