2015 NBA Draft: How Each Top Prospect Fits With The Minnesota Timberwolves
By Julius Lasin
D’Angelo Russell
Age: 19
Height: 6’5
Weight: 180
This is another unlikely pick and fit, not because it is an indictment on Russell’s talent or ability, but because of Rubio’s presence. Russell is a cerebral and crafty guard with exceptional size, but that sounds a lot like Rubio, and selecting him would be kind of redundant.
Nevertheless, Russell is a much more gifted scorer than Rubio is, and probably will be. Russell’s offensive ubiquity makes him an attractive prospect, as he shot 41.2 percent from the 3-point line last season, and had a 54.2 true shooting percentage (according to Hoop-Math), all while averaging five assists per game.
Outside of his offensive prowess, the Timberwolves also have a roster that can cloak any supposed defensive deficiencies linked to Russell’s average athleticism, with longer, quicker wings like LaVine and Wiggins.
When in fact Russell looks to be less of a risk than other prospects, his ceiling may not be enough to rationalize the abandonment of Rubio and the selection over Towns and Okafor, two players who fit a more pressing need.
