You have to give LeBron James an “A” for effort, but a big fat “F” for opening his big mouth. Despite being down 3-2 in the NBA Finals against one of the historically great teams in NBA history, the Cleveland Cavaliers weren’t truly done until LeBron began to display just how disappointed — and letdown — he was by his teammates during the last two games of the series.
Rule No. 1 in leadership: You are never supposed to show your opponents weakness, and LeBron’s weakness — since Game 4 — was clearly his teammates. And his frustration boiled over in the Game 5 postgame press conference when he said he wasn’t worried (being down 3-2) because he is the best player in the world. Not because of his good teammates or because his team was mentally tough. He was confident in his chances to win two straight against the best team in the NBA because he is the best player in the world.
You have to applaud him for finally making that stance after all these years of everyone else yelling it for him, but this was more out of him being mad and throwing his non-helping team under the bus. Instead of saying “I” he should of said “we” — and that was the moment the NBA Finals was won by Golden State.
He did all he could do to put his team on his back and make this quite possibly the best NBA Finals performance — and upset — in NBA history. Heck, if LeBron would’ve pulled off the win over Golden State, it might’ve been the most impressive postseason run in sports history. But, he fell short — again.
LeBron James was mad over the celebration the Warriors displayed after their Game 5 victory. I’m confused because I thought this was the big stage, the NBA Finals, winner takes all. So when you win a game that puts you closer to the ultimate goal, what else are you supposed to do after a huge victory?
But wait, wasn’t LeBron the same player that slammed the ball on the floor and let out a fighters yell when the Cavs beat the Warriors in Game 2? Maybe that wasn’t him, maybe it was the other best player in the world.
He took the recognition when he was playing lights out, now he has to take the criticism when it goes sideways.
Game 6 was his moment, it was do or die and he played great through three quarters, but then in the fourth quarter LeBron ran out of gas. Something that we’ve seen way too many times during his career in the NBA Finals.
But, hey, at least the best player in the world lost to the best “TEAM” in the world.
Congrats Golden State.
Next: LeBron was great, but the Warriors were simply greater
