NBA: Playing The ‘Just Imagine Game’ With 10 Alternative Scenarios – Part 1
By Mark Wilson
9. Just imagine… if David Robinson never got injured in 1996
A: I know that’s a question they have asked themselves since Tim Duncan’s arrival. Talk about a blessing in disguise. Yes, they had to deal with a disappointing season but the reward for that has been five NBA Titles.
Thanks, Mr. Robinson.
Can you imagine the ripple effect that would have had on the Spurs as we know them now? Maybe Pop doesn’t last that long in San Antonio, maybe the scouts never make it to see what a young Tony Parker, or Manu Ginobili can do. Maybe the Lakers begin their run of four straight championships a year earlier.
Maybe LeBron gets his first championship in Cleveland and never joins the Heat.
The two people this would impact the most would be Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson. Iverson was the young stud who had the NBA world buzzing with his electric play and speed.
Duncan was the soft-spoken kid from Wake Forest with a McHale-like game down-low. If Robinson never goes down maybe the 76ers end up with the No. 1 pick for the second-straight year and team Iverson with Duncan.
Sit and think about that for a minute. Iverson, Duncan, Tim Thomas, Clarence Weatherspoon, Derrick Coleman and Jerry Stackhouse. Who knows what could have happened in the City Of Brotherly Love?
