Team jerseys and logos are more important than many realize. It’s how cities, teams and leagues differentiate themselves. Whether it be an animal, a fiery ball and hoop or a simple artsy design, logos are part of the reason why we love some of our favorite teams.
And even though change is not always good, especially when it comes to storied logos, advances and improvements are almost always necessary. Even when the completely whiff on said improvements (*cough* Clippers *cough*)
And thanks to graphic designer Addison Foote, we got a nice demonstration on how each NBA logo could get a new futuristic spin. Foote redesigned all 30 logos in 30 days.
You can view all 30 logos in their entirety here, but here are a few of my favorites.
Minnesota Timberwolves
It’s quite the drastic change, especially compared to a few of Foote’s others, but I feel like this is a nice modern spin for the Wolves. It’s plain and not too flashy, but still comes across as slick. Plus, the plain text doesn’t take away from the ball-wolf design, which I absolutely love.
Los Angeles Lakers
I understand that many will fight me over this, but I’m not opposed to making changes to logos to even the most storied of franchises, which the Lakers are. The best part is that it’s not even a drastic change. The redesign looks a lot like the Lakers’ logo now; the star adds the perfect adjustment.
Sacramento Kings
Love the lion. Absolutely love it. It’s simple and doesn’t make the logo too busy, which I think it currently is. It’s plain, but also doesn’t look like a lazy design. And most of all, it just looks right. Feels like this should’ve been their logo all along.
Portland Trail Blazers
This Blazers redesign might be my favorite from the bunch. While I don’t hate their current logo, I absolutely love the simplistic design of this one. It’s clean and looks modern. It works.
Houston Rockets
Not a big fan of not having the rocket in the Rockets’ logo anymore. I’m hoping they bring it back sooner rather than later. But, assuming that isn’t happening anytime soon, here’s one that works. And guess what, it just isn’t a lazy dressed up letter.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The biggest reason why I really like the Thunder’s redesign is simply off the fact that it doesn’t look like something that was pulled off clip art, which their current logo resembles. Not sure on the color scheme, but that’s something that could be adjusted. All in all, it looks head and shoulders better than their current one.
