Phoenix Suns – What Now?

Well I ran out of teams in the Atlantic Division, but that doesn’t mean I ran out of teams searching for a direction. The Suns are definitely a team with inevitable changes on the way. What those changes will be and where they’ll take the franchise, however, are yet to be determined.

Among those likely changes that the team will face in the coming months will be trading away their remaining Morris twin, Markieff. His unhappiness with the organization stems from their decision to ship his brother, Marcus, off to the Detroit Pistons in what was a salary cap inspired move that they made in the hopes of luring in LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency.

They were unable to land Aldridge, but they did pull in Tyson Chandler, one of the league’s elite rim protectors. He’s, without question, there to help bolster the team’s poor defense that’s the result of constantly playing undersized.

Which leads me to the other point of contention within the Suns’ system. Who is their future in the backcourt? They’ve shuffled through two point guard rotations for the past few seasons and it’s still unclear as ever who their future plans will be built around.

Eric Bledsoe was once billed as having superstar potential, which was why Phoenix was so adamant about trading for him. Brandon Knight is their other current backcourt standout. After several years of uncertainty while playing with the Detroit Pistons, he rose to the occasion on an unexperienced Milwaukee Bucks team. At the deadline last season, the Suns brought in Knight and proceeded to slot him next to Bledsoe, allowing them to alternate on-ball duties.

The Suns have a solid young core that they can continue to build up and bring pieces in around. The questions though are whether they’ll be able to hold that group together and whether a star will emerge among them.
