NBA Week in Review: Who’s Rising, Falling Fast And Notes From Week 1

6 of 6

As to be expected with the dawn of a new season, the NBA and its players put on a show for its fans in a variety of ways. Memorable moment after memorable moment poured in night after night. It provided us with the perfect end to our long standing wait for basketball to return. So below is a list of the best moments from around the NBA in Week 1.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

  • The NBA Remembers Flip/Mel: A harsh reality of life is that it doesn’t last forever, and the basketball world isn’t immune to that. Early in the week, word broke that long time coach, Flip Saunders had lost his battle with cancer and had past away. Later on came the news that Hall of Famer, Mel Daniels, had also passed on. Rather than let their deaths and contributions to the game of basketball be swept away in the excitement of opening week, the NBA opted to honor the two legends in a number of ways. The beauty of the NBA is that it remains a family even when times are bad.
  • Chef Curry Cooks up 53: Did I mention the fact that I’m sold on Stef Curry being the best shooter in the NBA? Because after what he did to the Pelicans in their second meeting of the week, I am undoubtably on board. He went 17-of-27 from the field, with eight of his buckets dropping in from beyond the arc. That isn’t just great shooting, that’s the stuff of legend.

  • Dunks on Dunks on Dunks: Many people argue that the excitement around the slam dunk and three point shot have made players gravitate towards those two modes of scoring, which has in turn damaged the game. I’ll agree with part of that…it is really exciting. This first week alone we saw Harrison Barnes put Dwight Howard on a poster, Westbrook throw down a outback slam through two Nuggets, and Kristaps Porzingis spin off the Hawks to hammer one through the hoop. Needless to say we have some early contenders for dunk of the year…
