New Orleans Pelicans: 5 Reasons For Their Early-Season Struggles

Alvin Gentry

The New Orleans Pelcians GM, Dell Demps, is the reason for this atrocity going on in New Orleans. Dell Demps assembled a great team, and deserves a lot of credit for that, but his choice of coaches are the worst in the NBA. Monty Williams was bad because his subsitutions made no sense, his play calling was atrocious, and he couldn’t get his guys to play consistent. Dell Demps did the city a favor by firing Monty Williams, and just when you thought it couldnt get worse, here comes Alvin Gentry.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

Firstly, in his 13 seasons of being a head coach, he has 1 winning season. That says everything you need to know about him. Secondly, his teams are known to struggle defensively. The Pelicans struggled defensively last year, and they’re even worse this year. Lastly, he can’t draw up a play to save his life. The Pelicans don’t run plays; if they’re not running a pick-and-roll then they’re playing 1 on 5. You would think since he’s an “offensive coach” that they’d run up the score on teams, but they barely average 100 points per game. They don’t even run on fast breaks.

He cut Omer Asik’s minutes in half from last season. Asik is the worst offensive player in the league, but at least he rebounds and plays defense. THINGS THE PELICANS NEED. Last season he averaged 7 points/10 rebounds per game in 26 minutes. This season he’s averaging two points/four rebounds in 13 minutes. Alvin puts no trust/responsibility on Asik and Ajinça, and expects Ryan Anderson to carry the load for those guys, and it’s never going to happen.

The New Orleans Pelicans had a chance to hire Jeff Van Gundy and didn’t do so, and now they’re suffering from it. Although I believe the Pelicans will make the playoffs, I don’t think Alvin Gentry will ever lead his team past the first round. The sooner he’s fired, the better.
