(Buries face in pillow) They have Bobby Portis! (uncontrollable sobs) They have Bobby Portis (violently thrashing)! TH….TH….TH……THEY…..HA….HA….HA….HAVE….BOB…BOB…BOB….BOBBY..PORTIS! Sorry had to get that out of the way. It’s important to remember the Bulls still have some talent. Chicago’s roster features a former MVP, a future Hall of Famer, Most Improved Player of the Year, All NBA First-Teamer, College Basketball Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year and the best player in Europe.
They beat the Toronto Raptors four times, the Oklahoma City Thunder Twice, the Cavaliers and the Spurs. And on those nights, for fans, it was like see ghost. Dressed in throwback Rodman unis, Bulls faithful would marvel at the TV screen and say “oh, oh there it is! See, I told you they are good.” But then that great play would disappear the next night, leaving the ever optimistic fan looking stupid, believing what was no longer there.
Unfortunately, this train was on course to wreck years ago. When the front office began assembling this team, the goal was surround Rose with two very good players. And they found them, sort of, in Butler and Gasol. But this best squads in the league play team ball, not me ball. It’s all about a good offensive system, one that leads to open threes and transition layups.
The Warriors, Spurs, Hawks, Celtics and to some extent the Cavaliers all do it. The Bulls were built around the idea that three great players can carry a team to a by hoarding buckets and being superstars. But that’s not how sustainable success is built.
So where does all this leave the Chicago Bulls? How can they improve, or begin some sort of path back to contention? I don’t think anybody knows. And quite frankly, I’m not sure how many Bulls fans actually care. They’re fatigued by years of disappointment. It’s like going to a restaurant you hate and the waiter asks “so, what will it be?”

“I don’t know,” you say. “I’ll take anything. It can’t be as bad as last time.” Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
