NBA Rumors: The San Antonio Spurs are primed to make a push to sign Kevin Durant this summer, but would he be a good fit
The San Antonio Spurs have dominated the NBA for what the better-part of the last two decades. For the most part, they haven’t even used free agency as their biggest weapon in building dominant rosters.
Most of their damage was done via the NBA Draft, thanks to excellent decisions on Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard.
However, last summer they decided to finally use the NBA’s biggest offseason weapon – free agency. And after signing LaMarcus Aldridge, it appears that the Spurs are ready to utilize that outlet again. This time by pursuing the NBA’s most sought after free agent since LeBron James hit the open market in 2010 – Kevin Durant.

While there had been whispers throughout the past few months of the Spurs possibly chasing Durant this summer, we are now at the stage where San Antonio landing the biggest fish in the free agent market for the second-straight offseason is a real – and scary – possibility.
"[via ESPN]The Spurs, though, are said to have harbored similar fantasies for months in their famously stealthy manner."
"The stately Spurs, league sources say, are just as intrigued as Golden State by the thought of making a run at Durant come July 1."
And this should come as no surprise. Nearly every team – except for the Cleveland Cavaliers – will be pushing hard to secure a meeting with Durant. They’d be dumb not to.
He’s certainly going to have his choice of destinations. And the Spurs might even be one of his preferred options.
This should be very scary for every team in the NBA not named the San Antonio Spurs. Get this: the Spurs won 67 games this season with Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge as their best two options on the team. Imagine how many games they’d win with Kevin Durant as their best – or second best – player.
That’s scary.
San Antonio rolling out a lineup of Tony Parker, Danny Green, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge would be deadly. I’m not sure if even the Golden State Warriors would have enough firepower to combat that type of talent.
I’m sure Gregg Popovich would find a way to make Durant work in San Antonio, though, it would be interesting to see how Leonard and Durant would fare on the same club.

If nothing else, it’s quite interesting to think about. Soon, we may even have the privilege to see it play out.
